Volvo to Shutter Uddevalla Facility in 2013

Volvo Car Corporation will take complete ownership of Pininfarina Sveige AB in two years. When they do, the Swedish automaker will stop production of their C70 hardtop convertible at the Uddevalla manufacturing facility. The decision has been made with the company's best interest in mind. And, already Volvo is pondering the window they'll crack as the plant's doors close.
"The low volumes in the Uddevalla plant do not justify continued production," explains Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO, Volvo. "We will now look into when a next-generation Volvo convertible can be on the market and where it should be manufactured."1 Jacoby went on to justify the decision by sharing how the Uddevalla plant is only utilized to 65 percent of its capacity.
While the exact fate of the Volvo C70 hardtop convertible remains uncertain, it's comforting for all of us Volvo fans who like the breeze blowing through our hair to know, the company is already beginning to look toward future evolutions. 2013 is, after all, still two years away, giving the venerable automaker plenty of time to make an alternative plan.
Convertible aside, what will happen to the 600 employees, currently working at the Uddevalla facility? Jacoby indicates he is hoping that all of the skilled workers currently employed there will choose to join the Volvo team in Gothenburg or other locals throughout Sweden.
